SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE
This year, nineteen hundred and fifty-eight, the Minneapolis Public Schools will award a high school diploma to almost four thousand young men and women. In no other country has so much been done, in education, for so many-and we know that this is good.
As a graduating senior, your diploma, and what you have done to earn it, can mean much to you. If you have discovered a talent for mathematics, science, or literature, it will open the doors to further education in institutions of higher learning. If yours is a liking for the mechanical, clerical, or agricultural, a better starting job and possibilities of more rapid advancement should be your reward. But whatever your choice, the lessons taught you in school, of honesty, integrity, tolerance, democracy, social justice and ethical values can, if followed, enable each of you to make a profound impact on the future well-being of this World.
You can be justly proud of the attainment you have reached tonight. Your school, its teachers and other staff members, the Board of Education, your parents and friends all congratulate you and share in your justifiable pleasure on this important occasion.
Yours will be remembered as a generation faced with history's greatest opportunities, but also the greatest threats to our democratic way of life. It is my hope that your education will help you realize these opportunities to their fullest, and to also successfully face the challenges to democracy that lie ahead.
Congratulations and best wishes for the future.
