Bob AlftonI am still trying to achieve the challenge in my description in the 1957 Centralian: “A leader everywhere he goes; a friend to everyone he knows.” My opportunity to be an exchange student to Germany in the summer of 1956 started a continuing interest in both world affairs and travel Robert J. AlftonAlfton, Robert J. passed away peacefully at his home in Minneapolis on September 2, 2023. Bob was 84 years old. He completed an undergraduate degree and a law degree at the University of Minnesota. He joined the Minneapolis City Attorney's office in 1967 and was appointed Minneapolis City Attorney in 1978. He served as Minneapolis City Attorney for sixteen years. He was also an Administrative Law Judge for the State of Minnesota. Later in private practice, he focused on both public sector and private sector labor and employment matters. He was a member of various professional organizations. He served as president of the International Municipal Lawyers Association and the Minnesota Municipal Lawyers Association. He was a member of the World Jurist Association. He was a speaker at law conferences locally, nationally and internationally. He was also president of the Minnesota Aquatennial Ambassador Organization. He served in the U.S. Navy as an Operations Department Head and Ships Navigator on a fleet oiler. He was in the U.S. Naval Reserve until 1972 and earned the rank of Lt. Commander. He was an avid golfer. He played golf on the four continents of North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. He very much enjoyed golfing at St. Andrews in Scotland. He was a member of various golf leagues and he played in numerous golf tournaments. He had two holes in one. He was also an avid skier. He did many ski vacations and participated in various ski races. He is survived by his significant other, Nancy Foster; his son, Isaac Alfton (Holly); his grandson, Jackson Alfton; his granddaughter, Kenzie Alfton; his brother, Dennis Alfton (Nancy); and his niece, Erica Alfton. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Lucille Alfton, and his brother, Richard Alfton. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 23, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1200 Marquette Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN. Visitation one hour prior to the funeral service.
